Saw this on Goodreads and I cant stop raving about it, love it!!!
Thank you “Gary Reads” on Goodreads for this amazing review for Chasing Shadows – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/231659039-chasing-shadows
I tend to gravitate toward books by indie authors, and I picked this one up by Jasveer Dangi after listening to the audiobook version of one of his other works.
First things first—let me clear up what Chasing Shadows is not. It’s not your typical action-heavy Nazi treasure hunt novel. While there are some action scenes sprinkled in, this isn’t a mindless thriller full of violent shootouts and torture scenes like many other Nazi-related fiction titles. Another surprise for me was the setting—Canada. A Nazi treasure hunt in Canada? At first, I expected sweeping wilderness adventures, but Dangi takes a different route, and honestly, it works. (You’ll have to read it to find out where exactly it’s set!)
So what is this book really about?
Chasing Shadows stands out because it shifts the typical narrative. Instead of jet-setting across Europe like in a Steve Berry novels, this story brings the chase to Canada and blends it with a deeper theme: the moral responsibility of tracking down Nazi war criminals alongside the search for lost treasures. The cast is tighter and more ensemble-driven, including an idealist, a former Special Forces operative, and a team of Canadian Nazi hunters. It adds layers to the story without feeling bloated.
Dangi also does a great job weaving real World War II facts into the fiction. One detail that really stood out for me was the name of the escape vessel—it piqued my curiosity so much that I looked it up, and to my surprise, it was based on a real ship!
At just 240 pages, it’s a quick read—I finished it in two sittings. Definitely worth a spot on your TBR if you’re looking for something a bit different in the historical thriller or WWII-themed genre.
